Chevening interview was one of the most pleasant interviews I have had in my life. I don’t know if it was because of the people, my determination to get the scholarship, or the fact that I had prepared extensively in my head.

If you fail to prepare, you are preparing to fail.

Preparation is the key to a strong interview, but it should not be something you do once or last minute. It is a daily process you can practice with yourself and with others. Rehearse your answers in front of a mirror, say them out loud, or ask someone close to you to challenge you with questions and give honest feedback. Using AI can also be very helpful, not to memorise answers, but to brainstorm the types of questions the panel might ask. This combination of reflection, rehearsal, and smart tools makes you feel confident on the interview day.

Reach out to previous Chevening scholars

It is important to reach out to previous scholars, especially those from your own country, and learn what their interview experience was like and what kinds of questions they were asked. However, you should never copy anyone else’s answers. You are unique, and you have your own story, perspective, and motivation. Authenticity matters. Share your own experiences, and be honest about your achievements, challenges, and what you have learned along the way. Remember, it’s like Lego bricks, you are building your story from your goals, views, and experiences, and everything has to make sense as a whole.

Before the interview, make sure you read your essays multiple times. It is completely fine if some of your views or plans have changed since you wrote them, but you must know what you submitted and be able to speak about it confidently.

How to demonstrate leadership?

Demonstrating leadership in the interview often happens through the confidence in the way you answer questions, being clear, calm, and self-assured in your responses. The panel will notice not just what you say, but how you say it.

Treat the interview as a professional setting. Dress to impress on the interview day; dressing professionally helps set the tone, shows respect for the opportunity, and boosts your confidence. Also, prepare an interesting question to ask the panel at the end. Avoid something basic or generic, a thoughtful question shows curiosity, engagement, and genuine interest in the programme. It is your chance to show that you are not only prepared, but also thoughtful and inquisitive.

My top three tips to ace your interview are:

  1. Use AI to help you brainstorm possible questions
  2. Dress professionally to feel more confident, and
  3. Ask a thoughtful question at the end to leave a good impression.
